49 mi, 2,740 ft, Sullivan Canyon - Ride Leader : Bob Kellogg
Let's kick off the new year with a bonus Sunday Gravel Ride. Sullivan Canyon is a beautiful oasis that is normally a treat to ride. After the rains, 2 years ago, it was a complete mess. The first photo below shows what it used to look like. The second photo shows how it looked after the rains. It has been closed for almost 2 years while crews repaired all the damage and hopefully made it more resilient to future rains. It is still not officially open, but word on the internet is that you can ride it on Sundays when the crews aren't working.
The ride starts at Manhattan Beach Pier at 8:30, but you can cut out about 25 road miles by starting in Santa Monica. With the exception of one optional detour on Canyonback, the trails are all wide fire roads but there is a steep climb to get out of the canyon. Intermediate or strong beginners on a gravel or mountain bike will be fine. Please coordinate with the ride leader if you plan to start somewhere other than MB Pier.
