Beach Cities Cycling Club, South Bay

Welcome to Beach Cities Cycling Club, South Bay (BCCCSB)

I’m Gary Parsons, President of the club, and I’m excited to have you ride with us. We’re a social and recreational road-cycling community built on fun, fitness, and friendship, with a strong emphasis on safe group riding. Whether you're brand new to cycling or an experienced cyclist, you’re about to discover how fun, friendly, and energizing group riding can be.

With close to 300 members and group rides six days a week, we are one of the largest and most active cycling clubs in Los Angeles County.

Starting Out

Each week, we offer 12 activities, from our social and casual Level 4 rides to our fast and challenging Level 1 ride, with two intermediate levels in between. Please check our monthly Ride & Events Calendar for the start time and location. No advance sign-up is required — just arrive 10 minutes early and introduce yourself to the Ride Leader as a new member. Bike helmets are required for all club rides.

If you’re new to group cycling, this 4-minute YouTube video is a great place to start: Group Riding & Communication Etiquette.

Where We Meet

Most of our rides start in the open red-brick pedestrian plaza about 100 yards south (on the left) of the Captain Kidd’s Fish Market parking lot (209 N. Harbor Dr., Redondo Beach). Important: We do not meet in the actual Captain Kidd’s parking lot.

You’ll find plenty of free street parking on Carnelian, Broadway, and Diamond Ave. Paid parking is also available in the North Redondo Beach Pier lot ($2/hr), located right next to our meeting spot. Restrooms are located in the pier parking structure.

About Our Different Ride Levels

Every week, we offer 12 group rides across four levels (L1 through L4). Except for Monday, there is a different group ride each day of the week. Some rides are relaxed and more social (Level 4), while others are faster and more challenging (Level 1), with two levels in between (L2 and L3). Click the following link to see the parameters for the different ride levels: Ride Level Descriptions. (See attached)

Every ride has:

  • A Ride Leader to guide the pace
  • A Sweeper to make sure everyone stays together

You’ll Never Be Left Behind

We have a No Drop policy. That means:

  • We stay together
  • We regroup often at the top of climbs and major turns
  • f you have a flat tire or a mechanical issue, we will stop and help you

To make things easier, please bring:

  • A spare tube
  • A CO₂ cartridge or pump
  • Tire levers (2)

These are inexpensive and available at all local bike shops.

Fueling Up for a Club Ride

Depending on the ride level (L1–L4), rides last 2 to 4+ hours. You’ll burn roughly 300–400 calories per hour and can quickly run out of energy halfway through the ride, so please:

  • Eat a good breakfast
  • ring at least one bottle of water
  • Pack high‑calorie snacks (energy bars, gels, trail mix, etc.) found at any bike store

Staying Connected with the Club and Its Members

Every Monday, we send out a club newsletter with announcements, photos from past events, and upcoming rides, workshops, and social events.

It is also common for members to get together for post-ride refreshments at a local South Bay outdoor café.

We host non-cycling social events in the spring and summer, along with a holiday party in December. These events are a great way to meet other members and club leadership in a relaxed setting. Spouses and significant others are always welcome to attend!
