Ride Levels Definitions

L4 Group Ride: Beginner/Get in Shape Ride, 20 to 40 miles, mostly flat

L3 Group Ride: Intermediate, 35 to 60 miles, up to 3,000’ of climbing

L2 Group Ride: Intermediate/Advance, 40 to 80 miles, up to 5,000’ of climbing

L1 Group Ride: Advance, No Limits

Saturday

Name: All Levels Group Rides

Meeting Time: 8 AM

Meeting Location: Pedestrian Area, South (left) of Captain Kidd’s Restaurant

Ride Levels - L4, L3, L2 & L1

Description: Saturday is our biggest day with all four riding levels meeting at 8 AM in the same pedestrian area 100 yards south (Left side) of the Captain Kidd’s restaurant.  Plan to arrive by 7:50 AM and ask to meet your Ride Level Leader (e.g. Level 3). Each ride level will do a different route and riding speed (see Ride Level Definitions).


Sunday

Name: Sunday FunDay Whale Watch Ride

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Pedestrian Area, South (left) of Captain Kidd’s Restaurant

Ride Levels - L4+, L3, L2 & L1

Description:  Enjoy a beautiful ride up the west coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with views of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, and maybe an occasional whale.  The route is mostly flat with a few rolling hills thrown in for fun.  We will make a bathroom and water stop at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center scenic overlook (AKA Whale Watch) before returning home.  We may break into a faster and slower group if we have a large diversity of rider levels.  Post ride refreshments at a local cafe a possibility after the ride.


Monday

Name: Bundy/Mandy Canyons Climb

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Manhattan Beach Pier, by Lifeguard Station

Ride Levels - L1

Description: A fast paced 50-mile ride starting from the Manhattan Beach Pier and climbing up both Bundy and Mandeville Canyons for a total of 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This ride is designed for our advance riders who are looking for a more changeling ride with distance and elevation. 


Tuesday

Name: Explorer Ride                                      

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Pedestrian Area, South (left) of Captain Kidd’s Restaurant

Ride Levels - L3+, L2

Description: The Tuesday Explorer Ride explores our piece of LA, often taking roads less traveled. We leverage the fact that weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Highlights include the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park Observatory, Disney Pirate House, Queen Mary, Porto's Cuban Bakery, and as well as viewpoints like Baldwin Hills, Ken Hahn park, and the Palisades Blufftop on a clear day.  Routes vary between 35-55 miles, 1000-3000 feet of climbing. We are usually done by 1-2pm, and a coffee or meal stop is customary (usually at the end; sometimes the eatery is the destination).


Wednesday

Name: Weekly Running Group (AKA Chicks and Dudes)

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Aviation Park (1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Redondo Beach, north of Redondo Beach Performing Art Center). When we do an alternate run in Manhattan Beach or Palos Verdes, we send notifications by What’s App and the BCCCSB newsletter.

Run Levels – All levels are welcome. Run at your own pace.

Description: Every Wednesday at 9:00 AM a group of BCCCSB friends meets for a run on the track next to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, at the corner of Aviation Blvd and Manhattan Beach Blvd.  We run or walk laps at our own paces, and we finish by 10:00 AM. We also enjoy participating together in local races such as the Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K, the Manhattan Beach 10K and the Griffith Park Relay. Please come join us - the track offers free, ample parking, restrooms and water fountains.

Name: Hill Climbing Training Ride

Meeting Time: 4 PM

Meeting Location: Pedestrian Area, South (left) of Captain Kidd’s Restaurant

Ride Levels - L3

Description: This short late afternoon ride is ideal for members who would like to improve their overall riding performance and become better climbers.  The ride incorporates short hill climbs and rollers in Palos Verdes, making for a nice hill climbing training ride. Gorgeous ocean view vistas are a bonus we added, free of charge. Expect a 20-mile, two-hour ride with about 2,000 feet of climbing.


Thursday

Name: Gravel Ride

Meeting Time: 8:30 AM or 9 AM

Meeting Location: Varies, See Ride Calendar

Ride Levels - L2 with occasional L3

Description: Come join our weekly gravel ride as we explore different fire roads and trails on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Monica Mountains.  Gravel or mountain bike recommended.

Name: Social Ride Up to Marina Del Rey- Westchester Area

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Manhattan Beach Pier, by Lifeguard Station

Ride Levels - L3+, L2

Description:  This L3+ ride starts at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier by the Lifeguard station, and then heads north up to the Marina del Rey Bridge. The group then heads east on the Ballona Creek Bike Path, terminating at the Centinela Ave turnaround point, returning past the bridge to the Playa Del Rey Lagoon bathrooms. The group then does a loop around Westchester Parkway with possible sprints in both directions.  Post ride coffee and snacks on Cafe Bonaparte’s outdoor patio in Hermosa Beach.  Frequent regroups are a feature of this ride, which allows for both quick sprinters and average riders to finish the ride together.

Name: NITERIDERZ

Meeting Time: 5:30 PM

Meeting Location: Neptune Fountain on Malaga Cove Plaza Parking Lot

Ride Levels - L2+, L1

Description: Come join the NITERIDERZ group for a challenging, yet friendly, playful, yet sprinty, evening ride around the West Side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Front and rear lights required.  Group meets in front of the Neptune Fountain in Malaga Cove Plaza Parking Lot.


Friday

Name: Java Ride

Meeting Time: 9 AM

Meeting Location: Pedestrian Area, South (left) of Captain Kidd’s Restaurant

Ride Levels - L4

Description: An easy paced, flat ride to a local cafe or bakery in the South Bay or Westside.  Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or pastry, and good conversation with friends. Our most social and casual paced ride!   A great ride for a beginner rider or someone looking to get back into riding shape.
